Ossineke is an unincorporated community in Sanborn Township, Alpena County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a census-designated place (CDP) used for statistical purposes. The name is derived from the Anishinaabe word (either the Ojibwa or the Ottawa) ''zhingaabewasiniigigaabawaad'', meaning "Where the image stones stood",〔(A History of the Place Names of Alpena County )〕 though the modern Anishinaabe name for the place is ''asiniike'', meaning "to quarry".〔Weshki-ayaad, Lippert, Gambill (Freelang Ojibwe Dictionary )〕 ==Geography== According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , of which , or 0.30%, is water.〔 Ossineke is part of Northern Michigan.
